Another Visit from the Dead

In my dream, my uncle was insisting that my friend give him this piece of cloth that she was holding. This friend of mine didn't want to give him that piece of cloth because it was given to her by a friend. Then my aunt shows up in my bedroom. She is asking me to hurry up and to come to the porch right away because everyone will be leaving. Then I see my uncle. He was showing me a trick. It was a balancing act with a dumbbell and a stool. I wasn’t sure what I was looking at but my uncle looked real happy doing it. Suddenly, I was covered in a shroud of tranquility, almost the same feeling I had a few days ago when I first dreamed about my uncle, but this time stronger and more vivid that the feeling stayed with me long after I woke up. That peaceful feeling felt familiar. I recognized it as the same feeling that I had in a dream thirteen years ago when my grandmother died which I described here . It has been about a month since my uncle died. I wasn’t able to go home to a

10 Financial Commandments for Millennial Travelers

Image
The people at my workplace are a funny bunch. They just don't know it but they are in a “travel rat race”. A rat race is a race with no winners and each individual trying to get ahead of one another but with no end in sight. It all started when somebody at the office posted photos of his trips to Hong Kong and subsequently, Singapore. The next thing I knew, everyone else has followed suit. A few months later, the same person comes back from a trip to Thailand and Cambodia. Then suddenly, everyone at the office was getting ready to travel to those countries! The one who initiated the race is also the one who is leading. That person is currently heading for Australia. Japan, the States, and South Korea are next on this person’s travel bucket list, and the race has only just begun! In case you have been living under a rock (like my dad), you probably know that traveling is all the rage these days. You’re just not living life properly if you’re not traveling! My dad (who has been l

Home Kitchen Review Part 2

Image
After posting a review about the cupcakes made by Home Kitchen , I received a message from the owner asking me to go to their cafe because she had a gift for me. It was a really a pleasant surprise and I ended up going home with two boxes of free goodies! I wasn't planning on making any more write-ups about Home Kitchen but I had to tell everyone about their lollipop cupcakes (I'm not even sure what they are called exactly so I just made this name up)! In my previous post, I was all praises about Home Kitchen's cupcakes but I haven't had the chance to try their lollipop cupcakes yet so I made sure to eat them first. And man, I have to tell you, these little babies are the bomb! They're so moist, soft, and everything about it was just right. Each bite was like a piece of heaven bursting in my mouth! I would give you a more detailed description but I'm not sure I can describe food with the correct terminologies so forgive me if I sound inarticulate.

2 Definite Signs That You Are Impulse Buying

Image
A week ago, some people at the office convinced me that I "needed" a certain big-ticket item. They could not have been more wrong. I was about to take the plunge when indecision plagued me. I couldn't decide where I should make the purchase, the mall or an online retailer. After a few days of going back and forth with my decision, I started feeling like buying this big-ticket item was more hassle than I thought and that was when I realized that I was about to make a purchase on impulse. The number one sign that you are about to buy on impulse is when you want instant gratification. When you want something  RIGHT AWAY , it is a very clear sign that will glare at you in the face that means that you are buying something on impulse. Yes, I know the feeling. You feel giddy and you want it now, not in the next hour, not tomorrow, and certainly not next week! In fact, this was how I felt when I made the decision to buy a big ticket-item. It was a new toy, sleek, and shi

Home Kitchen Cupcakes

Image
Have you ever tasted cupcakes so heavenly that you almost sang hallelujah? I was coming home one day when the driver took an unexpected detour and passed by the back of a church. Who would think that sitting at the back of that church is a neat hole in the wall cafe? I have always liked supporting local products and micro enterprises so I decided to head there one sunny Sunday afternoon. The cafe looked closed when I arrived until a girl opened the gate for me. The interiors looked pretty cozy and homey. There was even a cat inside. I initially bought the red velvet cupcake and the carrot cupcake, each cost seventy pesos. Yeah, I know, seventy pesos is a lot for cupcakes. But I bought them anyway because I wanted to try them out, and let me tell you, they were extremely delicious and worth every penny! I initially told myself that I really shouldn't buy something so expensive (even though it tastes really good and all), but since discovering this cafe two months ago, I th

5 Ways to Save on Breakfast

Image
I know that eating a cheap but healthy breakfast can be challenging for office workers, so I decided to come up with some on-the-go breakfast ideas that are not only healthy but also inexpensive.   1. Something that my coworker did was buy a large bottle of peanut butter that cost more or less a hundred and fifty pesos and everyday he would buy your average two peso pan de sal from the neighborhood bakery. He was set for at least three weeks worth of breakfast! Yes, a large bottle of peanut butter will last at least three weeks, and you have to make it last for three weeks because a teaspoon of it has like two hundred calories and with the pan de sal which is probably a hundred calories each, that is already a meal's worth of calories if you eat three pieces of pan de sal with peanut butter a day. But isn't that amazing? You're looking at spending less than twenty pesos a day for breakfast! And you don't even have to bring your bottle of peanut butter with you every

Real Time 2016 Philippine Elections Results (Partial and Unofficial)

While COMELEC's 2016 election results website will not provide a real time tally of all votes being received by their servers, it will allow us to see a real time tally of votes from individual precincts. If you wish to know the actual ranking of each candidate, you will need to add the election results from all the polling precincts. There are more than 90,000 precincts all over the country so good luck adding the election results from all those precincts. The reason why COMELEC is doing this is to avoid something called "trending". Here is the link to COMELEC'S 2016 Election Results Website:  http://www.pilipinaselectionresults2016.com Inquirer.net will be providing real time results for the 2016 Philippine elections as well. Inquirer's election results website will show the real time OVER ALL ranking of all candidates for the presidential, vice presidential, and senatorial positions. Here is Inquirer's 2016 Philippine Elections Results Website:  http

The Resiliency of a Fallen First Lady

Image
Amidst a crowd of a few hundred people, I sat still, transfixed and in awe of what I was seeing. I couldn't hear what my brother was saying because of the rumble of applause that filled the auditorium. I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. On the stage, wearing a blue dress and looking a bit fragile but still very majestic was the iron butterfly herself, the imeldific Imelda Marcos. What was really puzzling to me was the standing ovation she was being given! I was born more than a year after EDSA revolution and all I know about that revolution is what I learned about it in school and what I hear about it today. But if there is one thing that the history books and documentaries have taught me, it is that the Marcos era was a really dark one in our country's history and that we should all be angry at the Marcos', hence my confusion at seeing hundreds of Filipinos roused by Imelda Marcos and even giving her a standing ovation. It was so weird, it felt like Ferdina

An Excursion To The San Sebastian Church

Image
One fine Sunday afternoon, my friends and I went on a visit to the San Sebastian church, the only Gothic structure in the Philippines. Getting to the San Sebastian church is very easy. From Cubao, we just took the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and got off at Legarda station and from the train station, San Sebastian church is just a few meters away by foot. I first heard about the San Sebastian church a few years ago and have always resolved to visit it someday. The San Sebastian church is the only all-steel church in the Philippines and the only prefabricated steel church in the WORLD. The steel parts of the church were made in Belgium and were transported to the Philippines using steamships. The steel parts were assembled in the Philippines under the supervision of Belgian engineers. If you think about it, this was pretty much 'globalization' at work in the nineteenth century. If you're wondering why steel was used in making the San Sebastian church, it was probably because
