An Underrated Museum in Cebu

Housed in an ancient edifice beside the Metropolitan Cathedral of Cebu is the Archdiocesan Museum of Cebu.




When I first read about this museum, I didn't really plan on visiting it since most reviews I read about it were quite underwhelming.

Two days before leaving Cebu, I decided to visit the Metropolitan Cathedral of Cebu. A few meters away from the entrance to the church, a building with a Spanish-era design caught my attention. Upon closer look, I realized that it was a museum.


Also known as the Cathedral Museum, the Archdiocesan Museum of Cebu houses several religious artifacts as well as a chapel with a collection of first class relics.



On the second floor, there are six exhibits where one can witness the evolution of Catholicism in Cebu.


One of the notable exhibits is a collection of religious images from the Spanish period. 









This exhibit showcases how the typical room of a priest would look like.



One of my favorite exhibits is the one that features several pieces of artwork.




The Cathedral Museum also contains an impressive display of items used during masses such as chalices.






For me, the most important part of the museum is the Chapel of Relics. The chapel contains 70 first class relics!





From upstairs, the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral was visible.


Since Cebu played a crucial role in the establishment of Catholicism in the Philippines, we can also say that this museum is dedicated to the history of Catholicism in the Philippines (even if it is usually described as a museum dedicated to the history of Catholicism in Cebu only). 

The history of Catholicism in the country is also practically synonymous with our country's history so I highly recommend putting the Archdiocesan Museum in your list of places to visit in Cebu City.

My visit was very pleasant and enjoyable. I learned a lot from the impressive collection of religious artifacts on display and the museum staff were very friendly and readily answered all questions that visitors had. Entrance fee to the two storey museum was 50 pesos.
